We already know that brands are starting to integrate digitally to reach customers. This is done by integrating online shopper marketing such as offering recommended products, coupons, and even loyalty programs. Some brands can be successful and retain those customers, but they have to have the right strategy.
If you've shopped at Urban Outfitters in the past year, you've probably been asked if you've downloaded their app while at the checkout counter. They increase their numbers in app downloads by offering 10% off of your first purchase with the download of the app.
By creating an account within the app, customers are able to easily shop through the app while earning rewards. UO Rewards are earned by scanning the app at each purchase in store, purchasing through the app, and even scrolling through the app and sharing products. Once the user has reached 100 points, they receive a coupon towards their next purchase. This is a really good way of attracting and retaining loyal customers.
I have fallen victim of this, I just recently got a coupon for $5 off my next purchase. This isn't the first time I've received a promotion like this, so it keeps me coming back for more.
The app is also really good about making recommendations and getting you to buy products they know you've had your eyes on.
Last week, I was on the app looking through the tops and I added a shirt to my shopping cart to keep my eye on it. A couple days later I got a notification that the top had been put on sale. The next day I happened to be in the store, and decided to check the sale room and sure enough I found the top there and made the purchase.
Without the notification, I probably would've just kept the top in my shopping cart until I eventually forgot about it.
Other brands are catching on to this online shopping strategic marketing, such as Adidas. Their app will differentiate themselves by offering products that you have told them you were interested, an online chat service, and a full online store.
